Heavy Vehicle Licensing –Transport for NSW

The primary method to get a heavy vehicle license is to complete a Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (CBA) with an accredited training provider. Under CBA, individuals are assessed under a wide range of driving conditions by an assessor who has been accredited by Roads and Maritime Services. If you pass, you can go to a registry or service centre to be issued with your upgraded license.

In Western NSW, Birrang has been contracted by Transport for NSW to facilitate this process, between the customer, RMS and the authorised Heavy Vehicle Competency Based Assessment (HVCBA) provider. Birrang has achieved a high degree of success when delivering the Driver Knowledge Test for this license. Birrang then engages the services of a suitable, qualified and reputable driver training and assessing organisation [competency based assessments] that will support leaner through the process.

Through the delivery of Learner Driver programs, community members and service providers requested assistance in the provision of licenses for LR MR and HR licensing for the following purposes:

  • Social services – Often community depend on a limited pool of licensed community members to operate the preschool, social services and service provider buses. Lost opportunity for employment and volunteers in the transport industry, local service providers will struggle to engage local, qualified, trained drivers the community members and service providers will struggle to participate in local forums, education and social functions.
Rural areas – opportunity for employment in agriculture sector. Harvest, general farming and mining positions

keys2drive is a revolutionary approach to learning road safety and the free driving lesson is an opportunity for the learner driver, driving instructor and parent/supervisor to learn it together.

What happens in the free lesson?

The free lesson goes for 60 minutes, during which the keys2drive accredited driving instructor will explain the keys2drive learning approach – ‘Find Your Own Way’ – and offer examples of how it can be used when learning to drive. The remaining lesson time can include a practical demonstration of these skills being used and taught, or can be used to explain the coaching approach in more detail – whatever will be most helpful to you.

The keys2drive free lesson is not intended to replace normal driving lessons; rather, it should complement them by empowering learner drivers to ‘Find Their Own Way’ to becoming safer drivers.

Learner drivers will receive training in the best ways to practice, helping them gain the confidence they need to prepare for safe P plate driving and beyond.

Parents/supervisors will come away with tools to help their learner drivers achieve a good foundation for lifelong safe driving.
